A Compassionate Lesson: Understanding Homelessness and Judgment

Written on

Chapter 1: A Journey of Self-Reflection

This narrative delves into the theme of homelessness, but more crucially, it emphasizes the nature of judgment.

The tale begins within a concrete skyscraper. For 17 years, I was employed in the oil sector, with my office perched on the 49th floor of a towering red granite and glass structure. The commute, elevator ride, and work hours allowed ample time for introspection. I frequently pondered whether my efforts truly contributed positively to the world. Regrettably, my only justification was a vague notion: that the oil I located was transformed into plastic for prosthetics. Such reasoning felt inadequate.

Driven by a desire to make a meaningful impact, I left the oil industry and dedicated several months to volunteering at a homeless shelter.

Section 1.1: The Blue Badges and Their Actions

The shelter staff often included individuals who had recently experienced homelessness. They were part of a transitional program, identifiable by their blue badges.

While working in the kitchen, a rare and generous donation of braised ribs arrived one day. The moment was quickly overshadowed as the blue badge employees rushed to claim the meal, whisking it away to the basement for their own enjoyment. Consequently, there were no ribs left for the homeless guests in the dining area. This incident struck me as selfish and inconsiderate, leaving a sour impression.

That was my first judgment.

Section 1.2: A Lesson in Empathy

Weeks later, while preparing sandwiches—just bread with ketchup—I witnessed a different perspective of homelessness. A disturbance broke out at the serving counter between a homeless man and a server.

“I already gave you a cookie,” the server stated.

“No, you didn’t!” the man countered.

“I’m not giving you another one,” the server replied firmly.

“Do you want me to put my foot through your head?” the homeless man threatened. “You gave it to my twin brother!”

The server, along with myself, was taken aback, questioning the man’s behavior. I initially assumed he was simply being greedy, much like the blue badge staff.

That was my second judgment.

Who was I to critique the actions of others? I couldn't possibly comprehend the challenges they faced on their journey to their current situation. My life had always been one of privilege, with food and shelter readily available. What would my hunger drive me to do?

Chapter 2: A Twist of Fate

Just as the homeless man stormed away in fury, he returned, this time with another man—his identical twin brother. Both wore matching blue coats, making it impossible to differentiate between them.

In a world desperate for compassion, this unexpected reunion served as a poignant reminder about judgment, crafted by the universe for those willing to learn. I was fortunate enough to be present for this lesson, and in the end, a man received the cookie he rightfully deserved.

The video titled "Homeless Senior Dog Tries a Cookie for the First Time" illustrates the sweetness and innocence of sharing food, echoing the lessons learned in my own experience.
