Chapter 1: Understanding What Makes a Writer Great

Over the last couple of years, I've immersed myself in the insights of the most effective writers online, applying their teachings to improve my own craft.

Here are ten traits that set "great" writers apart from those who are merely "good":

   Great writers engage in profound introspection. This depth of thought allows them to craft compelling narratives, essays, and other forms of writing that resonate with readers.

   They tackle topics from various perspectives, offering innovative solutions to intricate issues, which they communicate to their audience clearly and succinctly.

3. Selective Use of Historical References

   Rather than recycling historical data, great writers use such references judiciously and strategically to bolster their arguments.

4. Vivid Language

   They employ specific adjectives to animate their writing. For example, rather than simply mentioning "marketers aiming to sell courses," they might refer to them as "intrusive marketers eager to sell courses."

5. Strong Opinions

   Their viewpoints stem from thoughtful consideration, extensive research, and personal experiences. By sharing their narratives and insights, they forge deeper connections with their audience.

6. Empathy in Writing

   Great writers can empathize with their readers, crafting content that reflects a deep understanding of their audience's needs and aspirations—something AI struggles to replicate.

7. Journalistic Skills

   They are adept at interviewing, posing insightful questions, and revealing profound emotions in their writing.

8. Concise Communication

   They focus on what their readers truly want to learn, eliminating any unnecessary jargon or filler.

9. Ruthless Editing

   Great writers know what to remove, even if the text sounds appealing. They are stringent editors, excising anything that does not enhance their message.

10. Beyond Internet Research

    They invest time in genuinely understanding their subjects, gathering ideas even when they are not actively writing.

Final Thoughts

Not everyone possesses an inherent talent for writing, nor does one become a great writer instantly. Excellence is achieved through daily practice and dedication. While I’m still on my journey toward greatness, I recognize that I'm making progress.
