# Embracing Life Beyond Fear: Understanding Death and Its Impact
Written on
Chapter 1: The Impact of Loss
On February 25, 2017, my father passed away unexpectedly. I found myself dreading the funeral, particularly the moment I would first see him in the casket. Yet, for my mother's sake, I held her hand tightly, and together we looked down at him. It was an odd experience—his body was present, but I felt an overwhelming sense that he was absent. Dad was gone; it was as if he had slipped away to another realm, leaving his earthly form behind. Contrary to my fears, this moment became surprisingly comforting.
The words of Jesus resonate deeply in moments like these, as He reassured us the night before His crucifixion:
“Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. My Father’s house has many rooms … I am going there to prepare a place for you…” (John 14:1–2, NIV).
In the same way, I believe my father moved on to a prepared place. The Apostle Paul confronted death on multiple occasions, boldly declaring, “Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?” (1 Cor. 15:55, NIV). By challenging death, Paul highlighted its diminishing power over us.
Death remains a reality we all face, as evidenced by my father's experience and our own inevitable end. However, it no longer holds the same fear-inducing power; instead, it becomes merely a transition in our existence.
Chapter 2: The Transformative Power of Belief
According to Scripture, “…by his death, [Jesus] might break the power of him who holds the power of death—that is, the devil—and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death” (Heb. 2:14–15, NIV). This perspective on death brings ten profound consequences for how we choose to live today:
- You no longer focus solely on this life.
- You lose your fear of the dying process.
- You cease to fear those who may harm you during your life.
- You start recognizing the eternal potential in everything around you.
- You develop a deeper appreciation for what you currently possess.
- You come to terms with the notion that life’s journey is not the ultimate conclusion.
- You begin to view every decision through an eternal lens.
- You cultivate incredible hope for the present world.
- You realize that time is not abundant; it is perfectly allotted.
- You shift your concern from how others perceive you to how you can serve their needs.
