Embracing Minimalism: A Journey to Overcoming Anxiety

Chapter 1: Understanding the Weight of Anxiety
For a long time, I grappled with an underlying sense of anxiety that eluded my understanding. While the usual pressures from work, home, and relationships were present, I began to notice that even mundane tasks triggered feelings of unease.
Opening a cabinet, stepping into my closet, entering my garage, sifting through a drawer, and scrolling through emails became sources of stress. Was this a typical experience? I felt inundated each time I engaged in these simple activities, with racing thoughts occupying my mind daily:
- I should donate those dishes; I have far too many.
- I know I won’t wear those dresses again.
- I need to tidy up the pantry; it’s a total disaster.
- I can’t locate anything in this drawer, even though I placed the charger here.
Despite spending considerable time organizing and decluttering, it seemed futile. There always appeared to be more to tackle.
Then, a friend introduced me to Marie Kondo and her approach to decluttering, piquing my curiosity. I decided to read her book, and that weekend proved to be transformative. I devoured the book and, upon reaching the chapter about closets, I immediately took action and cleared out all my clothes.
Kondo poses a straightforward yet profound question that shifted my perspective on everything I owned: "Does this spark joy?"
As I laid all my clothes on the bed, I picked up each item, holding it close to my heart. With my eyes closed, I silently contemplated how each piece made me feel. Did it elevate my spirits, or did it drain my energy?
In just moments, I could gauge my emotional response to each item. For the first time, I abandoned logic and simply tuned into the energy each piece emitted. I didn’t second-guess my feelings. Ultimately, I ended up with two piles—one containing a staggering 80% of my clothes, ready to be donated. As I stared at the pile, a wave of relief washed over me. Many items were associated with negative memories, while others brought guilt for being unworn.
I recognized that the emotional baggage tied to these items contributed to my anxiety.
After neatly packing the donation bags out of sight, I turned to the remaining clothes and felt an undeniable smile spread across my face. I adored everything I chose to keep. It was all good energy.
The following day, I applied the same method to my kitchen and later, my garage. Letting go of possessions brought me immense relief. I hadn’t realized how much I held onto out of obligation or habit, which significantly contributed to my general anxiety.
And to my surprise, I haven’t regretted parting with a single item. Once gone, it faded from my memory.
Every time I encountered something in my home that stirred an uncomfortable feeling, it was a burden. All that clutter demanded time and energy for storage, cleaning, organization, and maintenance. Releasing myself from that obligation has been profoundly transformative.
Life flows with greater ease now—I have less laundry to contend with, fewer items in my cabinets and drawers, and less rummaging through boxes when searching for stored items. I now have more time and energy to dedicate to what truly matters.
Consequently, those previously stressful moments, like entering my closet or garage, now bring smiles and a sense of pride.
