# Embracing the Grind: Making the Most of My Year
Written on
Chapter 1: The Year of Commitment
This year has largely been characterized by tackling tasks I would prefer to avoid. The reason? I made a commitment last year to maximize my potential in 2024.
Surprisingly, this often means engaging in activities I find less than enjoyable. While I can’t delve into every detail, there’s one mantra I repeat daily to keep myself motivated:
The work just needs doing.
I picked up this phrase from a friend I truly admire. It encapsulates the idea that everything you aspire to achieve lies on the other side of the work you must undertake. This work can vary in intensity—sometimes it’s minimal, other times it’s substantial—but fundamentally, it’s all work that must be accomplished.
Many people, including myself, often fall into the trap of procrastination. While I’m not flawless and still have tasks I’m avoiding, I’ve also tackled a considerable amount of work because…
The work just needs doing.
What insights have I gained from this experience?
First, I’ve realized I have the capacity to accomplish tasks. This is a crucial truth to hold onto as you navigate life. Acknowledging this fact inherently boosts your self-confidence and allows you to explore new opportunities without trepidation.
Second, I’ve come to understand that every challenge is fundamentally a skill-building opportunity. If you approach life with the mindset that every endeavor is a skill to be honed, you can achieve remarkable success simply through practice. There’s immense joy and accomplishment waiting on the other side of perseverance; all you need is to grant yourself the freedom to try.
At the start of this year, I was unfamiliar with email deliverability for e-commerce businesses and others utilizing email for sales. Now, I consider myself quite adept in this area. The confidence gained from mastering this skill has empowered me to embrace a recent opportunity, despite feeling “unqualified.” Admittedly, I'm still working to improve, but that’s simply part of the process.
Why?
Because it’s a skill issue. As with any skill, consistent practice is essential for improvement. Ultimately, the work just needs doing. When I commit to it, success will follow.
And so will yours.
See you soon,
Dave.
