Rejuvenating Aging Eyes: The Power of Eyepower Red Therapy

Chapter 1: Introduction to Eyepower Red

Eyepower Red is an innovative product grounded in science, designed to rejuvenate aging eyes through the use of 670 nm light.

Photobiomodulation has been proven to enhance vision quality and serves as an effective eye care treatment for various conditions. A start-up in the UK has developed a red light therapy device specifically for eye treatment using 670 nm light. The manufacturer asserts that their red light therapy can energize eye cells, decelerate retinal aging, and promote overall eye health.

In my earlier article, “RLT Counteracts Age-Related Vision Loss,” I discussed the beneficial effects of 670 nm photobiomodulation on the retina.

While the use of photobiomodulation for retinal issues is well-established, the Eyepower Red device draws upon research from the Department of Ophthalmology at University College London (UCL).

Treatment, Not a Cure

Eyepower emphasizes that while the UCL research has demonstrated positive outcomes in partially restoring lost night vision and color perception, it does not claim to cure any eye diseases or visual impairments. Nonetheless, other clinical studies utilizing 670 nm red light have reported promising results for conditions such as:

  • Age-related Macular Degeneration
  • Retinal damage due to diabetes
  • Retinitis pigmentosa

Is it Safe?

Using 670 nm light for eye treatment can be intimidating. Questions arise regarding safe light intensity levels and exposure durations. My previous analysis suggested that the clinical light intensity of 40 mW/cm² seemed excessive for home use. It's important to note that these were short-term clinical trials. However, I have observed individuals creating homemade RLT devices that I deem unsafe.

It appears my concerns about long-term usage were validated; Eyepower has reduced the light intensity by over 75% compared to the levels used in clinical settings. The Eyepower glasses emit a safe intensity of approximately 8 mW/cm², which is lower than what has been sanctioned by the Ethics Committees of UCL and Moorfields Eye Hospital.

Design Features

The design of the eyewear is exceptional, with a universal fit. It features SMD dual 670 nm LEDs positioned behind white plastic diffusers, close to the eyes. The glasses can be recharged using a provided USB cable, and they include a charging port and an indicator LED on the underside.

Usage Recommendations

Eyepower UK advises a maximum of one three-minute treatment session per week. While additional sessions are permissible, they may yield only marginal extra benefits. Personally, I plan to start with two sessions each week, spaced evenly.

Morning Therapy

It is recommended to perform eye treatments only in the morning. Research from UCL indicates a significant decline in therapy effectiveness later in the day, with nighttime sessions offering minimal benefits. Eyepower suggests utilizing the device before 10:30 am on treatment days.

The unit likely incorporates a microcontroller to manage power levels and treatment timing, along with charging indicators. Upon activating the device, the red LEDs initially illuminate at a low intensity for three seconds before ramping up to full brightness for a three-minute duration. The device automatically shuts off after this time, which is a fantastic feature for convenience.

Bright Light Considerations

For some users, the intensity of the red light may be overwhelming. Those individuals can simply close their eyes, as the therapy remains effective.

Specifications:

  • Wavelength: 670–675 nm (Near Infrared)
  • Light Output: 8.0–8.5 mW/cm²
  • Flicker: None

Testing Light Intensity

To gauge the light intensity, I used my Apogee MQ-620 extended-range PAR meter. Some critics have questioned the use of this meter for measuring LED-driven photobiomodulation devices. However, it's essential to note that this instrument is specifically designed for narrow-band LED lighting.

The Apogee company has over twenty-five years of expertise in manufacturing environmental sensors. Those who disparage their products often lack understanding of their capabilities. For accurate measurements, users should avoid instruments designed for solar or laser radiation, as they are unsuitable for LED-based RLT evaluation.

Light Intensity Measurement from Eyepower Unit

I measured the intensity directly at the white diffuser:

  • Direct Contact: 23 mW/cm²
  • Distance of 12 mm (approximately ½ inch): 9.0 mW/cm²

Flicker was measured at less than 1%, likely due to ambient light interference.

Wavelength Measurement

Using a calibrated spectrometer, I measured the wavelength of light emitted from the Eyepower device, which registered at 673 nm.

Conclusion

Eyepower Red stands out as a high-quality and user-friendly eye treatment solution. I eagerly anticipate using my device weekly to harness the full benefits this technology has to offer. Eyepower Red operates under Planet Lighting Ltd., a UK-based company.
