Winning: Three Key Lessons from Exercise and Life's Challenges
Written on
Chapter 1: The Essence of Winning
"Winning requires a commitment to go further, exert more effort, and contribute more than anyone else." — Vince Lombardi
Achieving victory demands resilience. Facing discomfort can seem overwhelming, yet perseverance is an act of rebellion against the odds.
Pain is subjective.
It can range from mild to unbearable.
Having gone through childbirth twice without an epidural, I can attest to the reality of pain. While many women accomplish this daily, I share this not to boast but to illustrate my understanding of what pain entails.
Pain can serve a purpose if you allow it. Overcoming it necessitates more than just physical endurance; it requires mental flexibility and significant shifts in perspective. Moreover, perseverance must be anchored in the pursuit of a higher goal. Without it, what reason is there to endure?
Lesson #1: Define Your Own Vision of Winning
What does winning signify for you?
Clarifying this is crucial.
Until you articulate what victory looks and feels like, recognizing your achievements will be challenging.
Some define victory as being the first to finish, while others see it as completing the race, regardless of their position. For some, simply showing up and facing their fears is a victory in itself.
As you navigate your journey as a writer or reader, reflect on what success means for you. Is it reading five articles a day? Writing and publishing daily? Getting accepted by a publication? Receiving engagement on your work or knowing it has positively impacted someone?
Victory is a personal journey, and you hold the power to define it.
Lesson #2: Be Your Own Biggest Supporter
Do you recall the importance of self-talk mentioned in previous discussions?
You must advocate for yourself.
There are moments when you need to dig deep for courage and strength from within. You must champion your own cause and have faith in your beliefs.
While it can be disheartening to lack support, overcoming mental hurdles is essential. Represent yourself, even when it feels difficult.
Sacrifice for yourself, just as you have for others. Quietly cheer yourself on through struggles. Keep your vision focused on your goals and understand your "why"—even if it requires some unconventional self-talk.
Lesson #3: Show Up and Persist Despite Criticism
When your critics witness your determination, they will inevitably respect you, even if they don’t vocalize it.
Some may even choose to support you. If you find yourself as your harshest critic, it's time to clear the way.
Distractions abound on your path, but naysayers can become your fuel if you let them. Transform their negativity into motivation. Aim to surpass your own expectations, rather than seeking validation from others.
Believe in the goodness of people, even if some may have ulterior motives.
My Journey of Perseverance and Winning
I must admit, I have an aversion to pain, particularly when it comes to exercise.
I jokingly refer to my aversion as an intense allergy to physical activity.
When I engage in cardio, I experience an annoying itch that escalates the more I scratch.
In a bid to stay healthy and fit, I push through the discomfort, often while facing the lighthearted critiques of my children.
During one particularly challenging session, I coached myself with the mantra “push through the pain.” Despite the itchiness, I continued, even switching to push-ups to take a break.
To my surprise, my son joined me, sharing tips on proper form for planks.
His initial criticism transformed into admiration as he supported me through my routine.
I realized that my determination earned me respect and acknowledgment from my toughest critic.
That day, I defined winning for myself by showing up, motivating myself, and persevering through the discomfort.
Closing Thoughts
It’s natural to want to avoid pain, yet our tolerance for it varies.
At some point, we all encounter different forms of pain, and our responses reveal much about our character.
You achieve victory by defining what success means to you, representing yourself, and persevering through challenges while silencing your inner critic.
You are indeed a winner.
